Meet the Millionaires for Humanity

Here we look at; Millionaires for Humanity; Their Vision and Mission; and Why a Tax on Millionaires Is Essential. This is part of our series on Living Sustainably.

Millionaires for Humanity is an international network of multimillionaires who are concerned about the challenges that the world, and us humans, are facing. They’ve signed a letter from their respective governments requesting to be taxed more. They believe by taxing the rich more; equality will be achieved. They’re not only driven to promote equality but want to ensure the world is a safer place for all by fighting against climate change.

Is this your first time hearing about this group? Well, this review is designed to help you understand what this elite group stands for.

Introducing Millionaires for Humanity

Millionaires for Humanity are a group of high-net-worth people across the globe that are committed to promoting a sustainable environment. It’s an excellent idea that these individuals are committed to helping our future. They advocate for systemic change necessary for achieving sustainable goals.

The advisory board of international experts guides their work. Their secretariat is hosted by the Human Act, which is based in Copenhagen.

Millionaires for Humanity was founded by Djaffar Shalchi, an engineer and real estate entrepreneur, he founded Human Act in 2016, which later became Millionaires for Humanity in 2019 following the covid-19 pandemic. With the global issue of wealth inequality, he was passionate about implementing a 1% tax among the wealthiest.

The Millionaires

There are over 100 millionaires who have come out to support this cause of wealth tax. Nick Hanauer of the United States, Maarten Meijnen from the Netherlands and Sylvia Trottier from Canada are some members who have joined this movement.

Their Vision and Mission

This group of millionaires advocate for a 1% tax on all wealthy people globally. This tax aims to address societal issues like poverty and climate change, assist the world in recovering from the covid-19 pandemic, and realise the UN sustainable development goals.

The UN sustainable development solution network supports these claims that the 1% wealth tax could play a significant role in realising sustainable development. With stakeholders like the UN, government agencies, finance think tanks, and grassroots organisations, the Millionaires for Humanity play a significant role in addressing this funding gap.

How Millionaires for Humanity Work

At the national level, they work closely with credible local agencies engaged in tax justice and the fight against inequality in their countries.

Through this partnership, they spur a discussion on wealth taxes. Then, the members add their voices, highlighting the importance of wealth taxation, and further advocacy work follows, depending on the chances of introducing a 1% wealth tax in the country. Furthermore, the wealth tax poll reveals that the support for a 1% wealth tax goes beyond political lines.

Internationally, they partner with peers and allies, pushing international organisations to deal with inequality issues and the UN Sustainable Development Goals financing gap. They also call for further engagement with the UN, OECD and the EU.

As an international and independent network, they engage representatives across the political divide.

Should Millionaires Be Taxed the Same As Workers

It’s true that no millionaire ever existed without labour. As such, Millionaires for Humanity advocate that it’s time to tax millionaires the same as workers. They argue that taxing the wealthy is the solution to inequality and other health or educational crises.

It’s high time the government and responsible agencies acknowledge the “elephant in the room” that decision-makers fail to acknowledge or avoid discussing, which has a detrimental impact on the larger population.
