We live in a world that is sterilised and full of chemicals. Always trying to make everything ‘clean’. Always trying to kill bacteria. We need to learn to live with bacteria again because it’s the bacteria and microorganisms that are in and around us that help to make us healthy and resilient to disease and illness.

Here’s an excerpt from the amazing Eat Dirt book by Dr Josh Axe*

“In recent decades, modern ‘improvements’ to our lifestyle and food supply, such as refrigeration and antibiotics, have come with a cost: our health. Starved of actual nutrition, fed toxic levels of processed foods, and overtaxed by chemicals and stress, we’ve developed microscopic tears in our intestinal walls, leading to the widespread inflammation and weakened immunity that characterise a condition known as ‘leaky gut syndrome’.”

One way that we can remove chemicals from our lives is by switching from shop bought to homemade self-care products.

I make homemade body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and many more ‘natural’ recipes using the amazing Eat Dirt book by Dr Josh Axe*.

Here’s an excerpt from the book:

“I’ve found that when people transition to the DIY recipes, they are amazed at not only how fresh and clean they feel, but how the [essential] oils can help them focus, feel calmer and happier, and generally get stronger and healthier. They tell me that after the initial transition, they feel much safer knowing that these oils are not destroying their guy.”

Homemade Deodorant Making Equipment

It’s likely you already have what you need at home:

  1. Measuring jug
  2. Cutlery
  3. An empty glass jar (save one that you have used from jam etc)

The Different Types of Essential Oils

The type of Organic essential oils* that you use in the ingredients makes a big difference. You can play around with them based on your skin / hair type:

  1. Rosemary and Sage = All skin/hair types
  2. Lemon, Bergamot, and Tea Tree = Oily skin/hair types
  3. Lavender, Sandalwood, Germanium = Dry skin/hair types (inc dandruff)

Homemade Deodorant Making Ingredients

As the ingredients can be stored for a long time, I buy enough to make a few batches.

Following these ingredients exactly is NOT as essential as with soap making. To be honest, you can use these just as a guide and play with the quantities once you get some experience. Playing with the quantities will help you match the products to your skin type. You really can have your own, bespoke, self-care products, just for you.

You can buy each ingredient by clicking the name/link.

  1. ½ cup (100g) Organic coconut oil*
  2. ½ cup (115g) bicarbonate of soda – You can get this from local shops
  3. 40-60 drops Organic essential oil* of your choice

Recommended scents for women:

  • Lavender
  • Ylang-ylang
  • Sage

Recommended scents for men:

  • Cedarwood
  • Cypress
  • Clove
  • Rosemary
  • Bergamot

The Homemade Deodorant Making Process

This is the best bit of these recipes because they’re so easy to make:

  1. If you’re starting off with a hard block of coconut oil
  2. Measure the ingredients into a pan (for the hob)
  3. Very gently warm on the hob, only so the coconut oil melts enough to mix
  4. Take immediately off the heat
  5. Mix them so they are nicely combined
  6. Pour them into the bottle you’re reusing
  7. Allow to cool
  8. Store somewhere cool (to avoid the coconut oil melting)

To use;

  1. Rub your finger in the deodorant, to cover your fingertip
  2. Then rub underarms

That’s it!

You will be amazed at how good these recipes are. There really is no need to have all the chemicals and ingredients that are used in most shop bought products.
