Conserve Energy with Energy Efficient Electricals

Conserve Energy with Energy Efficient Electricals to help climate change

Here we look at; Finding the Electricals That Conserve Energy. This is one of over 40 ideas in our Sustainability Roadmap with Solutions to Climate Change, and part of our series on Living Sustainably.

If you already know that you want to conserve energy as one way to help climate change, here are the options to switch to energy efficient electricals:

  1. Sust-it – simply efficient shopping
  2. Calculating the cost of running old appliances, electricity usage
  3. Energy Cost Calculator UK from Go.Compare

If you want some more facts before making any decisions, let’s get into the details:

We’ve been getting into the topic of conserving energy to help climate change. One option is to Turn Off Your Gas Boiler in Summer. Another option is to use the eco setting on your washing machine, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, cooker, and other electricals.

Ah, wait. Hasn’t there been loads of greenwashing around eco mode and the energy saving claims made by electricals manufacturers. Well, yes, there has.

That’s why I like the idea of a website called Sust-it that was mentioned in an article by The Guardian called It’s not easy being green… rating white goods.

Finding the Electricals That Conserve Energy

There are so many options and things to consider when selecting a washing machine, fridge, dishwasher, or other electricals.

Whilst the best energy saving, energy conserving, or energy efficient electricals are often the most expensive, there are affordable options that don’t compromise energy efficiency.

That’s where Sust-it looks like a good option to help you create a shortlist of electricals using their GreenPlug score. The Sust-it GreenPlug score includes:

  1. Energy efficiency, based on published energy labels
  2. Filter by brand or capacity
  3. Purchase price
  4. Total cost of ownership

Can Replacing Old Appliances Conserve Energy?

There’s also a calculator to help you decide if you should keep that old appliance or replace it with a newer model that will give you an overall energy saving.

As a heads-up, I just spotted this website and thought it would be good to give it a plug. I’m not getting paid to do it. I haven’t used their website, apart from doing my research for this piece. I’m including it because it looks like a good tool to use when researching new appliances.

Go.Compare Energy Cost Calculator

I got an email about this calculator and whilst I haven’t used it myself I thought it would be good to include it here to help you find out how much something costs to run. You can use this calculator to pick the appliances you want to compare and select how long they’ll be in use for.

Here’s what Go.Compare say about it: Ever wondered whether it’s cheaper to run a gas or electric oven? Or how about an electric blanket for 3 hours versus turning the heating on for 30 minutes? Well now you can find out. To see how much something costs to run, use the calculator to pick the appliances you want to compare and select how long they’ll be in use for.
